We are calling for the upcoming 2026 federal budget to commit to a RENEWED & EXPANDED Federal 2SLGBTQIA+ Action Plan
We are concerned that queer communities are being left behind by Prime Minister Carney’s government — at a time when federal leadership on 2SLGBTQIA+ equality is most needed in the face of rising unaffordability and bigotry.
Without a new investment in the upcoming federal budget, the first-ever federal 2SLGBTQIA+ action plan will expire in March 2027 — leaving thousands of queer and trans people across the country without support.
That's why Queer Momentum, along with fellow queer, trans and allied organizations across Canada, is urging the federal government to deliver a renewed and expanded Action Plan with an investment of $90 million per year over five years in the next federal budget.
This may seem like a large number — but this proposal amounts to less than 0.02% of annual federal spending. That’s just one drop in the government’s spending, but will have a generational impact on front-line services, housing, healthcare, support for LGBTQ+ refugees, and economic and business development.
Our strategic objectives are to (1) unlock the economic power of Canada's queer community, (2) grow Canada's global human rights leadership in an age of backlash and (3) shore up the support and services that keep our communities going.
We need people across Canada to speak up and make clear to the Government: the renewal and expansion of the Action Plan isn’t just a desire — it's a material necessity felt by thousands across the country. Will you join us in calling on Prime Minister Carney, Minister of Gender Equality Valdez, Minister of Finance Champagne, and your MP to demand investments into a renewed 2SLGBTQIA+ Action Plan?
P.S. You can also join us for our Phone Zap that we will be hosting October 1st at 6pm ET! There, we will convene together on a Zoom meeting and place calls to the Prime Minister, Ministers, and MPs urging them on our asks. If you want to be more involved in our campaign, you can find out more and register for the Phone Zap here.
